Technology is transforming healthcare at all stages of the patient journey. The extent of what health practitioners can now do, given the right data, the right robots, the right insights, is truly remarkable. But handling such sensitive information needs to be balanced with a culture of privacy.
Healthtech startup Proximie understands that responsibility. That’s why it has joined the Privacy Compliance Hub network.
Founded by plastic surgeon Dr Nadine Hachach-Haram in 2016, Proximie is a web-based dashboard that allows surgeons to collaborate remotely via audio, video and augmented reality. Experts can guide a surgeon through an operation step by step, using digital annotations and drawings overlaid on a live video feed, sharing the world’s best clinical practices and helping to create better outcomes for patients. It’s a huge step forward for the 5 billion people around the world who lack access to safe surgery.
During the pandemic, Proximie saw its usage increase by 430% and grew its team to almost 90 people. Over a year, more than 10,000 surgical interactions in 300 hospitals across more than 40 countries were carried out on the platform. In April 2021, the team raised £27m in a Series B funding round to accelerate expansion in US and European markets. Its clients already include UMass Memorial Health hospital in the US, the American University of Beirut Medical Center in Lebanon, Guy’s and St Thomas’ NHS Foundation Trust in the UK, and the Ministry of Defence.
“Data is paramount to the evolution of healthcare, but with data comes great responsibility. Proximie is at an exciting stage of growth as it realises its ambition to connect surgeons from around the world. We look forward to supporting them with a healthy dose of privacy along the way.”
Nigel Jones – Co-founder, Privacy Compliance Hub
“Privacy is a non-negotiable foundation of good tech, even more so in health. We believe that a good privacy programme is one that entrenches data protection throughout the organisation’s culture. We needed a one-stop-shop which would accompany Proximie as it scales and the Hub was that solution for us.”
Laura Dietschy – Head of Legal, Proximie
