Hi, I’m Mark…
I coordinate our business development efforts at Second Nature, including the early development and implementation of our NHS partnerships. This includes all of the information governance processes that are crucial to protecting patient data at every stage of the clinical pathway. I spend a lot of time talking to all sorts of interesting external individuals including clinicians, academics, product managers, all with the desire to get our product into the hands of more individuals who need our help.
When I’m not working, I like to cycle outside when the weather is nice and cycle inside when it isn’t!
Privacy matters to me because…
… our health is exceptionally private. Privacy is important to remain respectful of an individual’s wishes, and treat them with the dignity that I would expect to be treated with.
I enjoy being a Champion because…
… it has a direct benefit to my job role and I like to be able to support the wider team and maintain standards. Privacy laws can be pretty dense and it’s not everyone’s cup of tea so I’m doing my bit to help steer the ship!
My top tips on engaging teams with all things privacy are…
… make it practical and tangible. When you’re too distant from the people whose data you’re protecting you get complacent. We frequently hear from our users and their experiences first hand so we feel closer to those we support. Understandably, we then do more to protect their privacy.
I have learned…
… that although working in a startup comes with the daily practice of taking bold risks, this is one of the areas where you can’t afford to take any!
The world could be better on privacy if…
… we put ourselves in other people’s shoes. It’s honestly as simple as that when you’re trying to decide whether something is the right thing to do.
