In the UK, the Information Commissioner’s Office has fined American Express £90,000 for sending out unsolicited marketing material, and a contact tracing QR code provider has also been penalised for sending 84,000 nuisance emails. In the Netherlands, the Canadian firm Locatefamily.com, which publishes people’s contact information without their consent was recently fined €525,000 for not appointing a representative in the EU. Experts believe thousands of British businesses could be in breach of GDPR for failing to do the same. Fines aside, we all have a collective responsibility to get this right. Just like climate change, the war on privacy can only be defeated if we work together. This isn’t about numbers on a spreadsheet. It’s about people and the future we want to build.

New to our network
Fintech Globacap joins the Privacy Compliance Hub
In such a heavily regulated sector, it’s crucial that fintechs get compliance right. Building a reputation for trustworthiness, security and efficiency is fundamental in the search for success.
We’re therefore delighted this month to welcome Globacap to the Privacy Compliance Hub Network. The company recently raised $9 million in a Series A round to further develop its platform built on blockchain technology and we’re pleased to be working with them at such an exciting time in their startup journey.
This month’s privacy news
- England’s NHS plans to share 55 million patients’ records with third parties via a new database unless they opt out.
- West Midlands Trains has been criticised for sending workers an email promising a bonus, which turned out to be a phishing simulation test.
- Air India discloses data of 4.5 million passengers collected across a 10-year period, were stolen in a cyber attack.
- A global coalition of technology companies is calling for urgent action against ransomware gangs, which are now routinely targeting schools and hospitals.
